Ugly and screwed together by blind chimps, but well designed for this kind of thing.
That fuel filler door probably costs a fortune.

Either that, or it punches into the cabin. Most automakers design their wheels to do so nowadays

As SnapUndersteer says, very likely intentional. The thing that causes most cars to do poorly on the small overlap test is the wheel (which is quite strong) getting forced into the footwell area. To prevent that, you ether need to have it break apart in a crash, or ensure that it will turn (and possibly be ejected) to avoid intruding on the space.

Yep, and good thing. Makes me think twice about buying non-OE rims for ours...

yea, but seeing the wheel just shatter like that give me doubt as to how it would hold up to a nasty pothole or something.

Only if you order an OEM part from the dealer!

Probably due to the reinforced lower cabin area, to prevent intrusion. Ever since the IIHS started the Small Overlap test the cars have been getting some extra beef in that area to minimise cabin deformation from the wheel and suspension.
